Still Life with a twist. Workshop by Claire Holloway

-THIS WORKSHOP HAS BEEN RE-SCHEDULED. NEW DATE TBA-

This six-hour workshop presents the techniques and lessons of traditional still life drawing with a focus on creating unique works of art. Each student will have the chance to set up a personalized still life with meaningful objects, and through guided instruction, will complete a graphite drawing of their set up. Objects such as photographs, ceramics, fabrics, jewelry, or family heirlooms are suggested. This class will be taught in a representational, academic style, with an emphasis on correct perspective, value and composition. The workshop will begin with an instructor demo and then move into guided work time. Still life drawing is not only one of the best way to hone drawing skills, but a rich process in which to arrange our emotions, histories, passions and relationships into a visual scene. We collect objects, treasure them, and pass them down from generation to generation. There is power in these objects, and there is significance in the artwork inspired by them.

About the Instructor:

Claire Holloway is an artist with a concentration on capturing the soulful essence of her subjects. Born in 1998, Claire grew up in Oklahoma City. With the plains surrounding her, she became fascinated with the intricacy of the natural world, especially of the relationships between humans, domestic animals, and wildlife found on the plains. Claire’s sculptural and two-dimensional work focuses on depicting the stories of animals and complex relationships between species. Trained classically, Claire’s inspiration comes from both the academic tradition of ateliers as well as the looser and emotionally charged work of 19th and 20th century artists. Claire’s education began in the academic tradition of French ateliers at the Oklahoma Academy of Classical Art. Under the instruction of Leslie Lienau, Claire learned the fundamentals of perspective, composition, value, and color in both drawing and painting. After being introduced to the history of representational sculpture at the Oklahoma Academy of Classical Art, Claire enrolled in sculpture classes with Paul Moore at the University of Oklahoma. Claire graduated with a BFA in Studio Art in the summer of 2021. Claire now teaches academic drawing, painting and sculpture at the Oklahoma Academy of Classical Art as well as maintaining her studio practice.
