Let’s kick off Her Flag on Saturday, June 1st, from 6 - 9 p.m. and a toast at 7 p.m.!
Marilyn Artus has been working on Her Flag since she came up with the idea in the summer of 2017. She is finally kicking off her 14 month road trip from coast to coast to celebrate the 100th anniversary the 19th Amendment on June 8th. She will take 17 separate trips to the 36 ratifying states and in collaboration with an artist in each state, create a HUGE flag with a stripe for each of the states that gave women the right to vote. Let's celebrate!
Her Flag is a New York Foundation for the Arts fiscally sponsored project and can accept donations that are tax deductible through their website.
About Her Flag:
On June 8th, 2019 award winning artist, Marilyn Artus, will begin a 14- month journey across the United States in celebration of the 100th anniversary of women gaining the right to vote. During her travels she will be sewing, Her Flag, a grand flag measuring 18 foot by 26 foot.
Her Flag will be the result of a collaboration with 36 women artists who live in each of the 36 states that ratified the 19th amendment granting women the right to vote. Each of these 36 artists will design one stripe of the 36 striped flag that Marilyn will sew in the capital city of each state.
The Utah stripe will be created by artist Jann Haworth, pioneer of fiber art sculpture in the 1960s and best known for co-designing The Beatle’s Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album cover, for which she received a Grammy. Nicole LaRue will be creating the stripe for New Hampshire. Nicole designed the official Women’s March on Washington logo and was recently interviewed by CNN about the design. Rora Blue of California will be representing her state and is best known for her social media presence. Rora Blue has collected over 36,000 unsent text messages from people all over the world for her The Unsent Project and she has over 88,000 followers on Instagram. New York artist, Indira Cesarine, is a multimedia artist and is the founder of The Untitled Space art gallery, which has been celebrated for its feminist exhibitions, including ONE YEAR OF RESISTANCE, and UPRISE ANGRY WOMEN, among many others.
The first stop of the journey will be in Madison, Wisconsin on June 10th, 2019, on the 100th year anniversary of the Wisconsin legislature passing the resolution ratifying the 19th amendment. She will continue her travels to each
of these 36 states in order of ratification ending in Nashville, Tennessee on August 18th, 2020. On this date, 100 years after Tennessee ratified the 19th amendment granting American women the universal right to vote, Marilyn will complete and display Her Flag.
Her Flag is not a political piece of work, rather a powerful positive symbol used to educate and celebrate this truly momentous American anniversary.
