Join us for the one-night exhibition and reception for 2022 Mentorship Summer Programming. The reception is from 5 to 7 PM on Thursday, August 4th. Light refreshments will be provided, and ARTSPACE always offers free parking at our North Entrance. Visitors will see the first glimpse of Pipes, a short stop motion animation film created by 12 students under the instruction of award-winning animator Nicole Emmons. Viewers will also experience projects made in our independent studies course mentored by ten local artists and our cardboard sculpture course taught by Glen Thomas. For more information on these summer programs, please see below.
All programming is at zero cost to our students, and ARTSPACE always provides meals during classes. If you are interested in supporting future programming and making these summer courses available for 2023, please click the “Donate” button below!
Student work from the following Summer Programs will be included in the exhibition:
Stop Motion Animation Course:
Three different courses are offered to our Mentorship students this summer at zero cost to expand on the curriculum we already provide. The first is Stop-Motion Animation, taught by award-winning animator Nicole Emmons. This course teaches our students an array of skills, including but not limited to storyboarding, set design, team building, various animation software, puppet building, lighting, filming, sound application, and math with real-world applications such as basic geometry and ratios. These skills are applicable in the real world and give our students an upper hand when applying for scholarships and diverse animation programs. Employment of special effects artists and animators is projected to grow 16 percent from 2020 to 2030, much faster than the average for all occupations.
Sustainable Art in Sculpture Course:
Our second course, taught by Glen Thomas, Sustainable Art in Sculpture, teaches how to work with environmentally friendly materials that are sustainable and cost-effective. 3D design is taught as a basic in every creative field, including architecture, graphic design, and marketing. Teaching the fundamentals of 3D modeling has changed the way we design; for the better. Not only does 3D modeling help the designers and end users visualize space requirements, but it also improves drawing efficiency and accuracy. Knowing the basics of modeling also gives our students an advantage in their careers and futures.
Independent Projects Course:
This one-week course is designed to help our students from conceptualization to realization of specific projects. From scholarship applications and portfolios to exhibition planning, the focus of this course is to help students build their careers and conceptualize a body of work. Students will be introduced to diverse creative individuals and their specialized mediums and processes. Over the week, our students will be able to work one-on-one with these local artists and delve into thinking critically about their processes. The five-day course will begin with a session to solidify their concepts. The next three days of the course are open studio time, where materials, studio space, and assistance are provided to our students at zero cost. The students will hone and finalize their project specifications with the aid of their peers and mentors. The week is completed with a professional presentation supported by a peer and mentor critique. Additionally, the students will have the opportunity to work with a professional photographer to document their finished work!
